Bookham Colts Bravo 5 - 2 Worplesdon Rangers
Worplesdon were expecting a tough match today away to Bookham Colts, who lead them by 12 points in the SPL Division 2 table. Rangers could only field the bare minimum of 11 players, and having lost the toss had to play uphill in the first half. From the start the game went as anticipated with the home side scoring in the third minute. Yet soon after, Ranger’s Jamie Pearson pushed forward to hit the bar, then moments later the equaliser came from Bradley King. The game continued with strong play from both teams and it was not until the 32nd minute that Bookham scored again with a beautifully controlled goal. Rangers soon replied with a fine set piece as Pearson crossed the ball to King who then passed to Joe Henley who put it away to make the score 2-2 at the break. In the first half Rangers had more possession but wasted their opportunities on a number of occasions.
Playing downhill after the break, Rangers started strongly but Bookham replied with two good shots. The first hit the bar, the second was bravely saved by Luke Liesicke. At the tenth minute though the game turned against the blues as Bookham scored their third from a header. From then on Bookham showed their greater strength and as the pressure mounted and tensions rose, Jamie Pearson received a yellow card, followed shortly by the Colt’s fourth goal. Now fitness issues, late nights and the lack of any substitutes began to tell; Rangers seemed to be standing back saying come and get me. This fatigue soon made it easy for Bookham to score their final goal of the match. However, despite seeming to have lost all shape as a team the Blues managed to rally and for the last 15 minutes held off a number of attacks from the Colts.
Final score 5-2 to Bookham. Rob Field, Colt’s manager summed it up in a kindly way saying that you will never persuade teenage boys not to party on Saturday night, just to save themselves for the match on Sunday!
